Korean Economist to Review Vatican's BooksZenit.  Benedict XVI has appointed a Korean economist, Thomas Han Hong-Soon, as the Vatican's international controller for the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See.  As financial controller, Han will be responsible for examining the Vatican's accounts and balance sheets.

Preserving a Critical National Asset: America's Disadvantaged Students and the Crisis in Faith-Based Urban Schools.  America’s inner-city faith-based schools are facing a crisis.  Between 2000 and 2006, nearly 1,200 faith-based schools in America’s inner cities have closed, half of which are Catholic institutions in poor neighborhoods. This has affected nearly 400,000 students.  President George W. Bush addresses the loss of this “critical national asset.”  Leadership Roundtable member B.J. Cassin and Best Practices honoree, Dr. Mary McDonald, contributed to the Whitehouse Summit.

German churches set up energy company.  Deutsche Welle.  As energy prices rise, Catholic parishes and institutions are developing creative responses.  The Leadership Roundtable is working with a number of Catholic dioceses in the US that are exploring initiatives to capitalize on available economies of scale in energy purchases and conservation.  In southern Germany the Catholic Church has joined forces with Protestant churches to launch a non-profit energy company to supply gas to parishes and charitable institutions.

National ministry summit calls for culture of accountability.  Over 1,200 lay leaders, deacons, priests and bishops gathered in Orlando for a national ministry summit on emerging models of pastoral leadership.  Kerry Robinson of the Leadership Roundtable addressed the summit and responded to calls for the development of a new culture of accountability.

April 4, 2008 -

Call for pope to bring healing and reconciliation to the Church in the U.S.  4 Corners with David Ushery.  Leadership Roundtable executive director, Kerry Robinson, joins a panel of experts on WNBC New York to discuss the upcoming papal visit; calls for healing and reconciliation in the Church and for the greater involvement of lay people, especially women and young adults, in Church leadership roles.  Other panelists include author, George Weigel and former Fordham University President, Fr. Joseph O’Hare.  The video is 30 minutes, with the panel discussion covering the last 19 minutes.

Young adult Catholics are interested in church ministry, study findsCatholic News Service.  Leadership Roundtable members Dean Hoge and Marti Jewel publish a national survey on young adults and church ministry.  More than half of the young adult respondents said the church needs to move faster to empower laypeople in ministry.  Bishop Blase Cupich, keynote speaker at the Leadership Roundtable in 2007, welcomed the results: "We are heartened at their level of interest, and we need to find ways to translate this attraction into active ministry that our church urgently needs."

National Ministry Summit.  Six national Catholic organizations will hold a joint Ministry Summit to explore emerging models of pastoral leadership in the Catholic Church today.  Leadership Roundtable executive director Kerry Robinson will address the summit with many Leadership Roundtable members presenting and leading action groups.  All participants will receive the newly published, Standards for Excellence: An Ethics and Accountability Code for Catholic Parishes.
